What is Ear Wax

Ear wax, also known as cerumen, is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal. It helps to protect the ear by trapping dust, dirt, and other particles before they can reach the eardrum. Ear wax can vary in colour, texture, and amount from person to person. It is typically yellowish-brown in colour and soft or flaky in texture. Excessive ear wax buildup can sometimes cause hearing problems and discomfort, and may need to be removed by a healthcare provider.

Ear Wax Removal

Ear wax removal is a procedure to safely and effectively remove excess ear wax from the ear canal. This can be done using a variety of methods, including ear drops, irrigation, suction, or manual removal with tools such as a curette or forceps. It is important to seek professional medical advice before attempting to remove ear wax on your own, as improper techniques can lead to injury or damage to the ear canal. If you are experiencing symptoms such as ear pain, hearing loss, or ringing in the ears, it is important to see a healthcare provider for evaluation and treatment.

Your ear wax removal appointment

We first evaluate the state of your ear drum (Tympanic Membrane), ear canal (External Auditory Meatus), and outer ear (Pinna) using Video Otoscopy.

Frequently, we discover that the primary issue is only an excess of wax production in our ears, known as cerumen, or a delayed outflow of wax from the ear.  Ear wax can occasionally become tough and painful, making it challenging to remove without medical assistance.

We can quickly get rid of tough ear wax so you may go feeling lot cleaner, healthier, and better. On rare occasions, we find infection. After describing what might be going on in there, we will properly recommend you to your GP for treatment or to E.N.T. for more assessment.  Often, your doctor will recommend straightforward remedies to address ear infections. Of course, in order to improve the chances of a successful and long-lasting solution, we can share the information gathered from your assessment.

It's common for us to occasionally experience a wax blockage, and while some people create more wax than others, don't worry—you're not alone. We can securely and painlessly remove wax in a single visit using a number of minimally intrusive and safe approaches.

Before having wax removed, apply medical-grade olive oil (available in-store) to help soften stubborn wax. Occasionally, in order to finish the removal, we might need to schedule another appointment. There won't be an additional fee in this case. It's about carrying out tasks both pleasantly and safely.

At Tailor-Made HearingCare, we also enjoy using specialized equipment for soft, gentle irrigation. The most effective technique for the situation at hand will always be used. You will also get a FREE Hearing Screening as part of this service, which will give you an idea of how well you are hearing right now.  Developing this baseline will allow us to detect any hearing loss before it worsens, causes complications, and takes away from the enjoyment and sense of sound. Come see us whenever it's convenient for you at our Hull, Willerby practice.
